It smudges the textures, and 7 is the maximum smudge, more than 7 and it's the same as 7. So all the textures are a wide 'color average' surface.
/r_vertexlight 1
This command disables shaders, which will disable shadows also, making the map light in every corner + making it more easier to distinguish people from the background.
After you typed these commands, in order to work you need a:
/vid_restart

And there you have it! Note that if you want your game to look like this in IU1.2beta2 you must enter these commands in normal quake also, immediately after launching quake that is.
So in order to work properly you enter the commands both in normal quake and IU1.2beta2 (when you are on my server or GSG9), save it with a \writeconfig xyz.cfg and you're ready to roll.
***Note that models will not necessarily be easier to see, but the textures are out and they aren't distracting you in the game.
You do not notice that textures bother you until you take them out. Simple human psychology like everything in this game.
